The Underdog Knight – DVD Review

Distributor: Vendetta Films Released: 2008 Genre: Action/Martial Arts Credits: Writers: Jing Wong Director: Sheng Ding Starring: Ye Liu, Anthony Wong Chau Sang Rating: M

The story of Lao San is very different to what you’d expect in a Martial Arts movie. A soldier who seems made to be in the military until an almost fatal accident leaves him with a mental disability and he is discharged. As Lao San continues to live his life after he is discharged under the illusion of still being in the military, he is shrugged off by family and friends and treated as ‘retarded’ by everyone save his girlfriend.

With unprecedented skill in martial arts, Lao San wages war against all the ‘bad’ men in the world, taking his innocence to dark places after his good deeds lead him to cross paths with a crime syndicate boss.

Ye Liu is wonderful as Lao San and is entirely believable with the natural physicality to match his character. The fight scenes are well choreographed although the dialogue was a little strange and difficult to follow in some places.

Overall a great little story with martial arts action in almost every scene to interest fans, The Underdog Knight is well worth the rent.
