Death Note volume 9 includes the following episodes: ‘Scorn’, ‘Vigilance’, ‘Malice’, ‘1.28′, and ‘New World’.
The animated series of Death Note is very different to the live action movies of the same name in many respects. The storyline whilst similar, varies in the animated series and is alot more drawn out and detailed (for obvious reasons) in the anime.
Episode 33 ‘Scorn’ follows the arrival of ‘Near’ in Tokyo and his group begins to investigate Mikami. Mikami is becoming more and more of a threat as she is manipulated by ‘Kira’ to do his dirty work.
Episode 34 ‘Vigilance’ focuses on Aizawa and how he uncovers Light’s deception and revealing the truth about him. Alot more interesting that the previous episode.
Episode 35 ‘Malice’ is a turning point for Takada and Light as his influence over her is tested, pushing Takada to end her life.
Episode 36 ‘1.28′ is a confrontation between Light and Near which is really entertaining and probably one of the better episodes on the disc.
Episode 37 ‘New World’ brings most of the story to a close with Light going insane, getting shot and barely managing to escape with his life only to be confronted by Ryuk the Shinigami (next to ‘L’ one of my favourite characters in the anime).
The best thing about Death Note really resides in the conflict between Light ‘Kira’ Yagami and the mysterious character of Lawliet (‘L’). Whilst the sub characters are important to the story and helped to facilitate many of the interweaving storylines that continued throughout the series, ultimately the highlight of Death Note lies within the good versus evil theme and the wonderfully created characters. The depth and multifaceted characters of ‘L’ and ‘Light’ are some of the best I’ve seen in a manga or anime. For that reason, Death Note stands out as one of the best anime I have in my collection (as well as the manga, which is equally superb).
