MadmanDistributor: Madman Entertainment  Released: 2008 Genre: Documentary Rating: PG

This DVD was supplied by Madman Entertainment New Zealand for review

Metal music has fallen on some hard times lately. Some people tend to generalise about Metal music being the music of the ‘devil’ only played by devil worshippers and listened to by degenerate types. Metal Mania is a relatively good documentary because it attempts to see beyond the hype and general consensus about the music and digs a little deeper, exposing some of the realities of what Metal music is all about as told by those who should know – the musicians themselves.

Metal Mania features informative interviews with several leading metal musicians and bands including Gene Simmons from Kiss, Linkin Park, Bleeding Through and Staind. It also shows how alot of the hype surrounding Metal music is created by the media and how metal music is viewed in communities outside of Europe and the US in particular, in Islamic countries. This was an interesting aspect of the documentary as I always incorrectly assumed that metal music was banned in Islamic countries.

Whether you’re a fan of metal music or just a fan of music in general, Metal Mania will provide you with some interesting tidbits about the music genre and will give you a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most famous heavy metal musicians in the world telling their story about their love for the music they create.
