Graphic Novel Review – Genshiken Official Book

Publisher: ATOM (UK), Little Brown and Company (US) Credits: Editorial Supervisor Kio Shimoku Adapted by Yuna Takanagi Translated by Mayumi Kobayashi Lettered by Michaelis/Carpelis Design Rating OT 16+

This book was provided by the distributor Del Rey Manga for review

If you’re a fan of Genshiken, then you’re in for a real treat with the Genshiken Official Book - it’s pretty much the tome of all things Genshiken, and then some. For a work of fiction the book reads alot like a manual of instructions for those wanting to learn more about otaku culture. The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture welcomes all otaku and non-otaku alike and the Genshiken Official Book will serve you well on your journey.

The book is split up into several chapters (nine in total) all of which detail in depth the specifics behind the Genshiken manga. Of course, even if you’re not a fan of the manga, you’ll be equally entertained. There are several well-written chapters that convey wit and enthusiasm for all things otaku-related – experiences that many otaku, seasoned or otherwise, will probably find amusing. All the content is stamped with the unique ‘Genshiken’ sense of style.

One of the coolest chapters is the first one which explains the Genshiken experiences of events like ‘Comic-fest’ and visiting ‘Akhihabara’ – the home of all things otaku. You’ll get a first-hand glimpse of how hectic and overwhelming events like ‘Comic-fest’ can be and of course, you’ll be able to see just how the Genshiken ‘pro’s deal with it all.

The details covered in the Genshiken Official Book are extensive which gives you a good idea of how involved the world of Genshiken is! Everything from what clothes to wear, what games to play and even how to setup a fanzine are all included. It certainly seems like no otaku ‘stone’ is left uncovered. Even the famous mangaka (author) Ken Akamatsu (‘Love Hina’) makes an appearance and talks about one of his favourite otaku events, ‘Comicket’.

Generally, I’d only recommend a book like this to hardcore Genshiken fans who love the manga series and would thoroughly enjoy reading this. But the Genshiken Official Book is written in such a way that makes it extremely appealing to a much wider audience. If you’re a fan of anything otaku, I highly recommend this book.
