Argh stupid plugin killed my site :(

So, I had everything nicely running on the new PCR blog (which used to be Digital Otaku dot net – I’ll explain that one later) and I thought I would go one step further and try and make the site more secure. I installed this plugin and my wp-admin directory stopped working! Completely :( So, I tried everything possible to fix it yesterday – tried disabling the plugin (which under normal circumstances, usually works) but not this time. As the particular plugin in question adds password security to your directories, it actually stopped me from accessing my own admin folder on the web server and right now, I still have a wp-admin folder on the server I can’t even delete!

I am not a technical n00b either – I worked in IT prior to becoming a writer in various roles, I used to work with IBM and AS400 machines which granted, don’t tell you alot about Apache protocols and how the security functions, but I am pretty tech-savvy. This plugin really caused alot of trouble for me. Thankfully, I didn’t lose that much data. I was able to copy and paste most of the content before I had to recreate the MySQL database (after TWO restores failed to fix the problem).

If this is what happens when you try to make your databases and content more secure… well, let’s just say it’s extremely frustrating if the security doesn’t work. Thank goodness my blog was new – otherwise I’d have possibly weeks or even months worth of data to restore right now.

Sad face…

So I’ll be back up and running very soon. I am tentatively rebuilding the site by adding plugin functionality and now I’ve started on content. Fingers-crossed I get it all up soon :)
